{"id":32,"date":"2014-03-17T01:11:03","date_gmt":"2014-03-17T01:11:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rondoaward.com\/rondoaward.com\/blog\/?p=32"},"modified":"2015-02-24T12:34:53","modified_gmt":"2015-02-24T17:34:53","slug":"vote-now-for-the-12th-annual-rondo-awards","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rondoaward.com\/rondoaward.com\/blog\/?p=32","title":{"rendered":"HERE ARE THE WINNERS OF RONDO XII"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"font-weight: inherit; font-style: inherit;\">\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p><span style=\"font-size: xx-large; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-size: xx-large; color: #000000;\">Vincent Price, The Blob<\/p>\n<p>and The Conjuring<\/p>\n<p>take top Rondo Award honors<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-large;\"><i>Rue Morgue and Monsters from the Vault share magazine nods; Monsterpalooza is top convention; Paul Larson named Monster Kid of the Year<\/i><\/span><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE<\/p>\n<p>(FIND COMPLETE LIST AFTER PRESS RELEASE)<\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<p>By David Colton<\/p>\n<p>CHFB News<\/p>\n<p>ARLINGTON, VA. \u2013 The undying legacies of Edgar Allan Poe and Vincent Price prevailed in the 12th Annual Rondo Hatton Classic Horror Awards, announced May 12 after an online vote by fans and genre professionals worldwide.<\/p>\n<p>Projects linked to Poe, Price or Roger Corman&#8217;s adaptations collected six Rondo awards in all, including Best DVD Collection, Best DVD Commentary, Best DVD Extra and Best Magazine Issue.\u00a0 The trend carried over to a Poe radio podcast and even a blog devoted to Price&#8217;s 1928 trip to Europe, reproduced in the young actor&#8217;s hand-written journal.<\/p>\n<p>Among more modern works, the ghost-hunting thriller <i>The Conjuring<\/i> was named Best Film of 2013, and &#8216;Too Far Gone,&#8217; the shocking mid-season finale of <i>The Walking Dead<\/i>, was named Best Television Presentation.<\/p>\n<p>The Rondo Awards, named after Rondo Hatton, an obscure B-movie villain of the 1940s, celebrate the best in classic horror research, creativity and film preservation.<\/p>\n<p>This year&#8217;s e-mail vote, conducted by the Classic Horror Film Board, a 19-year old online community, drew nearly 3,400 ballots. The 35-category ballot is the largest survey of the classic horror genre held each year, and nominees and winners tilt decidedly toward horrors of the 1920s-60s.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i636.photobucket.com\/albums\/uu89\/taraco53\/Rondo%20XII\/6ronsmall_zps9e6ca766.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"139\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Other Rondo winners cited for outstanding work released in 2013:<\/p>\n<p>Scream Factory&#8217;s <b>Vincent Price Collection<\/b>, a 4-disc Blu-Ray of six films ( Poe&#8217;s <i>The Fall of the House of Usher, Pit and the Pendulum, Masque of the Red Death, Haunted Palace<\/i>, and <i>Witchfinder General<\/i>, along with the campy <i>Abominable Dr. Phibes),<\/i> took home three Rondos: <b>Best Classic Horror DVD\/Blu-Ray Collection, Best Commentary (<\/b><i>Phibes<\/i>&#8216; director <b>Robert Fuest <\/b>and<b> Marcus Hearn), <\/b>and <b>Best DVD Extra <\/b>(for rare introductions to the Corman\/Poe films Price taped for an Iowa PBS station decades ago).<\/p>\n<p>In addition, the fan who found the deteriorating PBS footage, <b>Paul Larson<\/b>, was named <b>Monster Kid of the Year<\/b>, the Rondo program&#8217;s top annual honor.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">&#8220;I just wanted to do something respectful for the legacy of one of my heroes,&#8221; Larson, a PBS TV producer from Plattsburgh, N.Y., said. &#8220;I&#8217;d like to think (Price) would be happy to know his hard work has been seen by a wider audience than was ever intended for those intros. The fact that they have been so well received, well reviewed and appreciated says a lot about the lasting impact of Vincent Price.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Adding to the horror actor&#8217;s honors this year, <b>The Vincent Price Journal<\/b>, a compilation of Price&#8217;s hand-written diaries during a trip to Europe in 1928, was named <b>Best Blog<\/b> of 2013.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"> \u00a0\u00a0 In the scholarship and literary categories,\u00a0<b>Hidden Horror<\/b>, a compendium of 101 cult films by <i>HorrorHound Magazine&#8217;<\/i>s <b>Aaron Christensen<\/b>, was voted <b>Book of the Year<\/b>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u00a0\u00a0 And <b>Bruce Hallenbeck<\/b>, a long-time Hammer expert and writer for <i>Little Shoppe of Horrors<\/i>, <i>Diabolique <\/i>and proponent of the petition to release more Hammer Blu-Rays in the USA, was named <b>Writer of the Year.<\/b> It was the second Writer of the Year honor for Hallenbeck.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>In the <b>Best Magazine <\/b>categories, the Canada-based <b>Rue Morgue<\/b> was the winner in the mass market division for the sixth consecutive year; <b>Monsters from the Vault <\/b>was Best Magazine among fan publications, its third win.<\/p>\n<p>The revived <i>Famous Monsters of Filmland <\/i>carried two winners: A striking portrait of Margaret Hamilton&#8217;s Wicked Witch by <b>Simon Thorpe<\/b> was named <b>Best Cover<\/b>, and an article detailing the relationship between the late Ray Bradbury and cartoonist Gahan Wilson by <b>Terry Pace<\/b> was voted <b>Best Article<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p><b>\u00a0\u00a0 Tim Lucas&#8217;<\/b> talk with director Quentin Tarantino in <i>Video Watchdog<\/i> about the best genre sequels was picked as <b>Best Interview; <\/b>Jon Kitley&#8217;s <b>They Came from The Krypt <\/b>from <i>HorrorHound<\/i> was voted <b>Best Column; <\/b>and <b>Fangoria&#8217;s <\/b>issue devoted to Roger Corman was voted <b>Best Themed Issue.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i636.photobucket.com\/albums\/uu89\/taraco53\/Rondo%20IX\/rondobutton_000.jpg\" alt=\"rondobutton_000.jpg\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u00a0\u00a0 Other awards: Criterion&#8217;s release of <b>The Blob<\/b> was named <b>Best DVD\/Blu-Ray<\/b>; MeTV&#8217;s <b>Svengoolie <\/b>was again voted <b>Favorite Horror Host<\/b>, and <b>Monsterpalooza<\/b>, a convention devoted to makeup and special effects, was tapped for the third time as <b>Best Convention<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Among independent films: <b>Son of Ghostman<\/b>, a spoof of suburbam horror-host rivalries gone bad, and <b>Dracula 1931 Trailer,<\/b> a &#8220;homemade&#8221; version of the Bela Lugosi trailer, took home Rondos.<\/p>\n<p>The <b>Best Documentary<\/b> category was especially competitive, with <b>The Ackermonster Chronicles<\/b>, a no-holds-barred look at the founder of <i>Famous Monsters <\/i>magazine topping works on the VHS boom of the 1980s, <i>The Phantom of the Opera<\/i>, Vampira, Dr. Shocker and others.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u00a0 <b>Joe Kane<\/b> (aka The Phantom in the magazine <i>Videoscope<\/i>), was named <b>Reviewer of the Year<\/b>;<b> Jason Edmiston<\/b>, who had two covers nominated, was voted <b>Artist of the Year<\/b>; and <b>Eric Puckett<\/b> was voted<b> Fan Artist of the Year<\/b>.\u00a0 An award named in honor of the late Hollywood creature-builder Henry Alvarez was given to sculptor <b>Casey Wong<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Japanese monster fan and publisher <b>Hajime Ishida<\/b>, a long-time friend of the late Forrest J Ackerman, was named this year&#8217;s<b> International Fan of the Year<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>Horror hostess Penny Dreadful&#8217;s lycanthropic sidekick and husband <b>Garou<span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"> (aka Magoo <\/span><\/b><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><b>Gelehrter <\/b>), was awarded a<b> &#8216;Pure in Heart&#8217; Rondo<\/b> for his courageous and growling battle against illness.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Finally, based on suggestions from Rondo voters, the following six <strong>Monster Kid Hall of Fame<\/strong> inductees were named:<\/p>\n<p>The <b>Don Post Studio<\/b>, creators of monster masks that helped shape the monster craze of the 1960s; classic horror historian <b>Greg Mank<\/b>; and <b>Del and Sue Howison<\/b>, owners of L.A.&#8217;s influential horror store Dark Delicacies.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Sadly and posthumously, three major figures who died this year but left an indelible mark on the classic horror scene were inducted as well:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u00a0\u00a0 Writer\/editor <b>Bhob Stewart<\/b> of <i>Castle of Frankenstein; <\/i>artist\/publisher <b>Larry Ivie<\/b> of <i>Monsters and Heroes<\/i> and more; and <b>Mike Vraney<\/b>, whose Something Weird Video operation rescued hundreds of cult horror and exploitation films from destruction.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Many of the Rondo winners will receive Rondo busts at the Wonderfest convention in Louisville on May 31.
