More than <strong>6,500 ballots<\/strong> arrived, shattering previous records.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>&#8216;Godzilla Minus One&#8217; stomps<br \/>\n<\/strong><strong>competition in record Rondo turnout<\/strong><em><br \/>\n<\/em><em>&#8216;<\/em><em>George Pal&#8217; is Book of the Year;<\/em><em><br \/>\n<\/em><em>New annual David\u00a0 J. Skal Award announced<br \/>\n<\/em><\/h2>\n<p>FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE<\/p>\n<p>By David Colton<br \/>\nCHFB News<\/p>\n<p>ARLINGTON, VA. \u2013 Propelled by a record-breaking online turnout, voters in the (Gasp!) 22nd Annual Rondo Hatton Classic Horror Awards overwhelmingly backed <strong>GODZILLA MINUS ONE<\/strong>\u00a0as the best genre film of 2023.<\/p>\n<p>More than 6,500 ballots shattered past turnouts, and helped shake up this year&#8217;s winner&#8217;s list. Several magazines from the United Kingdom, including <strong>CLASSIC MONSTERS FROM THE MOVIES<\/strong>\u00a0and<strong>\u00a0THE DARK SIDE<\/strong>\u00a0won first-time Rondos, which honor the best\u00a0in classic horror, science fiction and fantasy. At the same time. magazines such as\u00a0<strong>SCARY MONSTERS, FANGORIA, MIDNIGHT MARQUEE<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>HORRORHOUND<\/strong>\u00a0were celebrated as well.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, a biography of <strong>George Pal,<\/strong>\u00a0creator of films such as THE TIME MACHINE and WAR OF THE WORLDS, was voted Book of the Year, and a 3-D version of the cult film,\u00a0<strong>ROBOT MONSTER<\/strong>\u00a0from 1953 was voted Best Blu-Ray and Best Restoration.<\/p>\n<p>This year&#8217;s Rondo Awards also marked the death in a car crash last January of influential horror historian David J. Skal by creating a new award in his name. <strong>The David J. Skal Horror Research Award<\/strong>\u00a0will recognize revelatory examinations of horror history. The first Skal Award was given to\u00a0<strong>Jim Coughlin<\/strong>, who examined the largely unknown career of Ted Billings, who had a minor role in BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN (1935), but appeared unbilled in hundreds of other films..<\/p>\n<p>In individual categories, <strong>Sam Irvin<\/strong>, author of THE EPIC SAGA BEHIND FRANKENSTEIN THE TRUE STORY, an NBC TV movie, was voted Best Writer,\u00a0<strong>Mark Maddox<\/strong>\u00a0was voted Best Artist,\u00a0<strong>Lee Hartnup\u00a0<\/strong>was voted Best Fan Artist, and\u00a0<strong>the late David Skal<\/strong>\u00a0was tagged as Best Blu-Ray commentator.<\/p>\n<p>Three <strong>Special Recognition Rondos<\/strong>\u00a0were awarded: To the late<strong>\u00a0Ned Comstock<\/strong>, a USC Film Archivist who helped horror historians for decades; to\u00a0<strong>Vanessa Harryhausen<\/strong>, daughter of pioneering stop-motion animator Ray Harryhausen; and to <strong>Chris Endicott<\/strong>, who helped finish the late<strong>\u00a0Dave Allen&#8217;s<\/strong>\u00a0stop-motion film, THE PRIMEVALS.\u00a0<strong>Bobby Zier<\/strong>, a young online influencer who uses TikTok and YouTube to explain classic horror films to his followers, was named <strong>Monster Kid of the Year.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Inductees to Rondo&#8217;s <strong>Monster Kid Hall of Fame<\/strong>\u00a0were convention organizer<strong>\u00a0Anthony Taylor<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Don and Vicki Smeraldi<\/strong>, editors of several monster magazines,\u00a0actress and writer\u00a0<strong>Barbara Crampton<\/strong>, film historians\u00a0<strong>Walt Lee and Donald C. Willis<\/strong>, and writer\u00a0<strong>David J. Schow<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The Rondo Awards, named after Rondo Hatton, an obscure B-movie villain of the 1940s, honor the best in classic horror research, creativity and film preservation. This year\u2019s e-mail vote was conducted by the Classic Horror Film Board, a 29-year old online community. A full list of winners, runners-up, and honorable mentions can be found below.
